ILO/EILO – Why Can’t I Breathe?

ILO (or inducible laryngeal obstruction) is a disorder characterized by the structures of the larynx narrowing, or closing, when you try to breathe in. This means that, instead of staying open to breathe in, the vocal folds or structures above them narrow or obstruct the airway. This makes it feel like you cannot breathe. These attacks happen in response to triggers like irritants or exercise. EILO (exercise induced laryngeal obstruction) refers to the form of ILO caused by exercise and is commonly seen in adolescents. ILO is different than asthma or anxiety attacks. Once diagnosed, ILO is best treated by an SLP.
